Author: Leigh Bardugo
Series: Six of Crows (#2)
Kaz Brekker and his crew have just pulled off a heist so daring even they didn't think they'd survive. But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they're right back to fighting for their lives. Double-crossed and left crippled by the kidnapping of a valuable team member, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope. As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz's cunning and test the team's fragile loyalties. A war will be waged on the city's dark and twisting streets―a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of magic in the Grisha world.
SO. GOOD! Agh, this book was just YES. There is something about heist-related books that works every. single. time. and damn did Crooked Kingdom tick pretty much every box that I could possibly think of. All of my favourite characters were there – Kaz, Inej, Nina, Matthias, Jesper, Wylan – and I loved seeing all of them grow, develop, and bloody kick ass. The odds are really stacked against them in Crooked Kingdom, even more so than in Six of Crows, and the scheming <3 <3 <3 All of Kaz’s plans were so freaking smart and I just LOVED IT ALL. Even the “villains/bad guys” I adored because seeing them bested, seeing Kaz and the others bring them down when the odds were just so bad was what made this book. I lived for the end, waiting for all the little threads to come together and to see them just plain out win.
I seriously cannot even start going through everything I loved because so much happens and there are so many characters but it was a superb sequel and wrapped the series up so well. One thing I will say is that I could have done with more Inej-Kaz scenes because they are most definitely a solid ship of mine but what was there was on point and I have to hand it to the author for not pushing their relationship beyond what suited the book. Also, the other ships – Nina/Matthias, Jesper/Wylan – I LOVE THEM ALL. Ahem, just a few feels there. Anyway, I haven’t read Bardugo’s Grisha series but after Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, I am a fan and I will absolutely be reading whatever Bardugo brings out next.
